Glenn Underground-GU Essentials EP

Never been able to catch Glenn Underground DJ over the years and to be honest I haven't really delved into lots of his work; but what I've stumbled across is pretty damn fine. Like this aptly titled GU Essentials EP released back in 1996. All the tracks are top notch!

I LIKE TRAINS-Terra Nova

Some bloke called Captain Scott died 100 years ago today. I've only loved this video and track for about 5 years (since it was released) and you could call it a fitting tribute to the man who came to his demise as he explored Antartica. Click below to listen or watch the video (they've dismanted embedding their video which is a shame as it's ace). Their new album drops really soon.

Soundwaves Project .02

April 7th 2012 8pm-2am Number 20, Penryn.

After the success of our first event back in December, Soundwaves Project .02 is finally upon us! The second instalment is once again a charitable event and this time is in aid of two excellent local organisations, Shelterbox and Porthtowan Surf Life Saving Club.

Our second party will be based this time on the south shore, in the lovely and intimate surroundings of Number 20, situated in the heart of Penryn.  Once again our ethos is to provide a night of eclectic vibes and good times for some great local causes. Together with the help of the Driftwood Spars Hotel, we managed to raise almost £500 at our first event and thank everyone involved for their support.

Organiser and head of the brains trust behind the idea Jennifer Johnson had this say "The basic ethos of Soundwaves is total inclusion. We suggest a £3 donation on the door but allow people the freedom to pay what they like and all money received goes directly to the charities involved".

‘Soundwaves is not about massaging egos or pushing any one genre, the DJs are welcome to play what they like and everyone plays for the same length of time. In short there are no rules just honest happy people, happily playing music they honestly love to people who want to make a difference and hear an amazing mix of music.’

Check out the lineup below...

Losoul-Behind Closed Doors (Theo Parrish Remix)

Starting the week off with a right bang today! Theo's rework of Losoul sounds at times it could have been lifted off his debut album First Floor which isn't too suprising as it was released in the same year. I think just about every release on this label was mint.

Reverso 68-Fruit Bowl

Some lovely warmth featured in this track. Really needed as it's bloody colder up north. Reminscent in parts of early Larry Heard. The duo of Pete Herbert & Phil Mison have a new EP dropping soon to follow on from this nifty little compilation CD released last year featuring some of their favourite forgotten balearic and disco tracks and a fair few unreleased numbers.

BNJMN-Blocks

When your not in the position to buy records you either really want or you know you'll just regret not buying, it gets kind of annoying when record shops advise you 'not to sleep on this one'. Potentially harmless words like this I'm sure are the cause of the ending of many a relationship not to mention landlords up and down the country going without their rent. Anyway  I 'slept' on this track last year. And now I've discovered it and it's ace. That is all.

Freerotation 2012

FREERO IS GO

The 2012 lineup has finally been announced and it's fair to say it's once again completely infested with a fantastic selection of artists and DJs (not to mention the 'residents'!) After my visit to Baskerville Hall last year and my subsequent blogpost/diary/ramble it's THE festival I've been looking out for in terms of lineup. The real buzz can now start providing you can get your hands on a bloody ticket! Looking all systems go for me on that front, and I can only wish you luck in your best endeavours to get hold of your own. Failing that come back in here in mid July to check out how much fun I had and leave an appropriate 'arsehole' comment if necessary!

A couple of DJs who made up two of my favourite mixes from last year are on the lineup. Never seen DJ Deep before and I had complimentary tickets to see Mike Huckaby last year in Manchester, but after a hefty bike ride round some beautiful countryside lanes and way too many day time bevs, I missed out on it like a bit of a knob. Enjoy.

Codeine-Frigid Stars

Bands reforming is about as interesting as new music. But bands still keep doing it. Artists have cottoned on to the fact that music nerds like myself are discovering their music over the internet; albums are being repackaged and remastered whilst money-spinning tours begin in earnest. When some bands do it I want to call upon Al-Qaeda to go about their business quietly. When others do it, such as slowcore pioneers Codeine, I feel like jumping for joy. But then I realise it's Codiene so the initial excitement will, after several listens turn to gloom as I put away my house and disco records for early 90s slow sludge that despite it altering my mood and making me miserable still sounds fucking amazing. They play ATP I'll Be Your Mirror event in May at Alexandra Palace in London and re-release all three albums on 'heavyweight' vinyl (probably so it'll cost more in shipping) the same month. Check it here.

Jon Thorne's Oedipus Complex- Manchester Road

As I embark back to my place of birth for a few weeks stay, I thought I'd share a song to suit. If you were ever into the band Lamb you might recognise the name of Jon Thorne, who played double bass in the group. As a solo artist under the title 'Jon Thorne's Oedipus Complex' he released Manchester Road, a collection of modern jazz sounds of the mid noughties with a sound similar to contempories such as Cinematic Orchestra and Nostalgia 77. The title track reminds of Manchester in many ways; hazy, hectic, and of course of infrequent nights spent at Matt and Phreds Jazz Club.

One of my favourite Planet E releases of all time. Wanted a copy for ages, but then the missus had one of course. Big Win. Couple of pops in their for good measure too.

Gene Chandler-I'll Make the Living If You Make the Loving Worthwhile

Just a beauty here from Gene Chandler. It may be potentially sexist and doesn't really pay attention to the equal pay law; but who cares if the music is this good. A man needs some guaranteed action if he's gonna cover the bills! This is one of many highlights from the latest Horse Meat Disco mix compilation that came out last summer. Buy it here.

Joshua-Let The Spirit

Whilst going through a few CDs I burned for 'djing' a couple of years ago and listening to them in my car, I rediscovered this deep house gem by Joshua. Probably one, if not my favourite Prescription releases of all time, it was part of the 'Foot Therapy' EP, originally released in 1995. Was repressed a couple of years ago and released on mp3 so it's not tooo difficult to get your hands on.

Maxmillion Dunbar-Girls Dream

I continue my Maxmillion Dunbar love-in with a track from his 2010 debut album 'Cool Water'. The album on a whole was full of slowed down cosmic boogie 80s revisionist sounds. On 'Girls Dream' we are treated to lots of hazy samples and nice synth sounds which make for a lovely beatdown boogie cut.

The Pendletons-Waiting On You

Big up to the Soundwaves Facebook Group for turning me onto this one. 'Waiting on You' is the B side to The Pendleton's ultra rare and obscure 7" single 'Coming Down' released in 2010. Can't be found anywhere apparently. Big shame as it's crisp sunshine sample heavy soul is a real treat.

Soofle-How Do You Plead?

Back in the late 90s/early 00s I was heavily into the 'French Touch' with all the usual suspects such as Motorbass, Cassius, Daft Punk, Bob Sinclair etc on heavy rotation. Was also quite heavily into Shazz, who later produced the epitome of 'lounge' house with his 2002 track 'Falling In Love'. Back in 1994 along with St Germain as 'Soofle' he put out this wonderfully deep number 'How Do You Plead?' as the B side to 'Acid Eiffel'; Laurent Garnier's acid classic. I must admit this came out a little bit before repetitive beats made any sense to me but I quickly sought it out after hearing it on the near flawless DJ History Mix by Bicep from last month. Ace!

Nicholas Bowe-Ball Street & January

Over the last 12 months, I've shared some of Nicholas Bowe's crazy creations on my blog. After the success of The Institute of Unlimited Funds, Nicholas went on to create Ball Street; a sitcom about a bunch of weirdos who live on a street named after Michael Ball. This went on to capture runner up prize for best sitcom pilot at the COFILMIC 2011 and developments are afoot for further episodes and increased exposure. Check it out below.

Despite all this on his plate, he continues to also make bedroom music of the highest quality. Whilst the track may be entitled 'January', the beautiful soundscapes offered here dwarf all thoughts of a gregorian calendar and point to another world altogether. Stunning.
